On Monday, April 28th, 2025, a 44-year-old woman drove into the YNOT After School Camp, killing four people in the community of Chatham, Illinois. According to the Illinois State Police, a black Jeep SUV drove off the road, through a field, and into the camp’s building on Breckenridge Road in Chatham. The woman behind the wheel crashed through the east side of the building, then continued through the building, striking multiple people, and exited through the west side of the building.
This catastrophic incident resulted in four individuals losing their lives – two 7-year-olds, one 8-year-old, and an 18-year-old from Springfield, with six other children facing serious injuries.
The community has come together with “Chatham Strong” uniting residents and businesses. Passersby can see red ribbons on trees and red t-shirts throughout the time, signifying the unity in this grieving process.
What Caused the Crash?
At this time, the cause of the crash has yet to be determined. The driver was not injured in the collision but was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Toxicology reports are pending, and the investigation itself is ongoing.
Sangamon County officials say this catastrophic event is not a targeted attack, but they’re still looking into why it took place. Determining if negligence played a role is a crucial aspect of this case for establishing liability.
