YAZ AND YASMIN BIRTH CONTROL LAWSUITS

Charleston Defective Drug Attorneys

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against major drug manufacturer Bayer AG over Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills, which can significantly increase a patient’s risk of blood clots. According to a 2011 study released by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), drospirenone – the synthetic form of estrogen used in Yaz and Yasmin pills – may increase the risk of blood clots and gallbladder complications by up to three times more than other leading alternatives like levonorgestrel. Those who have suffered from blood clots, stroke, or heart attack as a result of taking Yaz birth control may be entitled to seek fair compensation from Bayer AG. At Spiros Law, P.C., our birth control lawsuit attorneys can help you discover who is responsible for your injuries and hold them accountable through the civil justice system. It’s our goal to ensure that you have the resources needed to recover and heal, and with over 100 years of experience in product liability, we have established a strong track record of success for defective drug claims in Charleston, IL and beyond.

How Does Drospirenone Increase Blood Clot Risks?

Whether taken by itself or combined with another oral contraceptive, drospirenone has been proven to increase potassium levels in the blood, which can lead to dangerous blood clots as well as heart rhythm disturbances. Echoing the findings of the 2011 FDA report, a Danish study published in BMJ found that women using drospirenone and similar contraceptives faced twice the risk of blood clots as compared to traditional birth control users. If unchecked and untreated, blood clots can quickly travel to the lungs, heart, and brain, causing life-threatening injuries such as stroke and heart attack. According to the lawsuits filed against Bayer, the German pharmaceutical giant failed to adequately disclose the risks of using Yaz and Yasmin, and as a result, many young women taking birth control for acne control and family planning purposes suffered serious injuries. Between 2008 and 2011, it was estimated that Yaz contraceptives claimed over 100 lives. The following blood clot types are most strongly associated with taking Yaz or Yasmin:

  • Myocardial infarction or heart attack
  • Cerebral embolism or stroke
  • Deep vein thrombosis, or leg blood clots
  • Pulmonary embolism, or lung clots

Holding Bayer Accountable For Birth Control Injuries

As of January 2020, Bayer has never formally acknowledged the health risks of using Yaz, Yasmin, or the generic formulation Ocella, even though over 19,000 such cases have been resolved or settled with the company. While the multi-district litigation (MDL) for Yaz and Yasmin claims closed in January 2019, there could still be injury victims who have not received appropriate compensation for their losses. Bayer failed to protect consumers and provide adequate information about the risks of using Yazmin, and the company should continue to be held accountable for claims. As trusted dangerous drug lawyers in Charleston, IL, Spiros Law, P.C. can help you navigate the often-confusing world of product liability litigation. We’ve recovered millions for our clients on past personal injury cases – and we never back down in the face of negligent corporations.
