Holiday Driving Safety Tips

Holidays are meant to be a joyful and relaxing time, but the holiday season is accompanied by a large increase in accidents on the nation’s highways. Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday travel season, meaning there are significantly higher amounts of traffic on the roads starting now and ending after New Years. As the number of vehicles on roadways increases, the amount of car accidents increases as well. Whether you’re driving several hours to spend time with family or quickly running out for last minute presents, you need to be informed and prepared in order to stay safe on the roads. The following tips will help you and your family stay safe while traveling on the roadways this holiday season.

  • Fully inspect your vehicle before leaving – Ensure all of your lights are working, tires are properly inflated, windshield wipers are operating, etc.
  • Plan your route – Be proactive and plan ahead, looking into local traffic, weather reports, and road conditions.
  • Take your time – It is important to follow the posted speed limit in order to keep yourself and others around you safe. When traffic is increased and road conditions are less than ideal, slowing down is essential to staying safe.
  • Be prepared for emergencies – Always travel with a fully-stocked emergency roadside kit in your vehicle. With winter weather comes an increase in vehicle emergencies such as a dead battery or a vehicle stuck in the snow. This kit will help you stay prepared in many emergencies. Also, keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent the fuel line from freezing in colder climates.
  • Get a good night’s sleep – Before departing on a major family trip, it is important to get a full night’s sleep. Not getting enough sleep can impact your motor skills. It is best to be well-rested and alert, especially during extended periods of driving.  If you find your concentration slipping, take a break to get some fresh air or take turns with a passenger.
  • Leave early – The roads will be full of people traveling in a hurry during the holidays. Leaving early will help alleviate anxieties and allow you to be relaxed and take your time while driving.
  • Never drink and drive – This season is full of family and company holiday parties. If you plan on celebrating with alcohol, do not drive under any circumstance. The amount of drunk drivers on the road increases during this season, making the roads even more dangerous. Be responsible and plan ahead with either a designated driver, taxi or ride sharing app.

Driving during the holiday season can bring about many anxieties for drivers. Although it can be stressful, staying prepared can prevent a lot of possible accidents. However, sometimes accidents are unavoidable due to the actions of other drivers on the road. If you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident, contact a car accident attorney at Spiros Law, P.C. to hold the responsible party accountable.
