Breast Implant Complications

In January of 2022, reports came out by Health Canada that nearly ten times the previous number of reported cases for breast implant complications were reported all at once in a data dump scandal. Some of these reports included complications that led to rare cancers, as well as near misses which could be life-threatening if they occur again. Companies that produce breast implants, such as Allergan and Mentor, have tried to cover the volume of faulty implants they produce in order to have surgeons continue to purchase implants from their company.

Keeping information like this from the public is completely unacceptable. Not only is it misleading when trying to make the decision to have the surgery, but it is also unreliable for surgeons who are making decisions on where to purchase implants from. If you or someone you know has had breast augmentation by way of implants in the last 20 years, look out for these signs:

  • Inflamed Tissue: Inflamed tissue around the site of the implant could be an early sign of Breast Implant Illness. This illness can be a cause of irritation, or in the worst cases a rupture of the implant.
  • Autoimmune Symptoms: Symptoms like difficulty concentrating, memory loss or dry mouth could be a cause of your breast implant leaking.
  • Fatigue: Fatigue might mean that your breast implant has leaked and is causing some sort of infection that your body is trying to fight off.
  • Physical Symptoms: If you notice that there is discoloration evident while examining the area near the implant, there may be some complications.

If you have ever or are currently experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Infection by a breast implant can be a life-threatening condition. Once you seek medical attention and tend to all your symptoms, it is important to know your next step.
