Accident Kills Good Samaritan on Interstate 57
A Bartlett man giving aide to another motorist on Interstate 57 near Onarga was killed on Wednesday.
Jimmy Lee Westbrook was driving in the northbound lanes of I-57 in the late afternoon of November 28th when he lost a tire to his vehicle near mile marker 277. The 58-year-old resident of Brownsville, Tennessee was able to get his car to the shoulder and attempted to retrieve the tire from the median around 5:40 p.m. However, as he returned to his vehicle Westbrook was hit by second car which left his body on the pavement.
Bartlett resident Jack S. Douglass stopped to help Westbrook’s female passenger drag Westbrook’s body out of the road. But when Douglas, 80, ran back to his car to call for help he was struck by another passing car. Douglas was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana and died there at 11:01 p.m. Westbrook was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
I-57 was closed for several hours during the time of the accident investigation. At this time no citations have been given.
