Fall into Grain Elevator Results in Death

A St. Anne man died after falling into a grain bin and becoming trapped while at work for First Elevator Co. The business is located three miles west of Grant Park, IL and the grain bin was storing 10,000 bushels of corn at the time of the accident. The employee, an unfortunate victim, was 58 years old and a 40-year employee of First Elevator Co. Shortly after falling into the grain bin, another man jumped in trying to save him and first responders were dispatched at 11:15 a.m. According to Manteno Fire Chief, Scott O’Brien, the first responders were able to maintain contact with the second man in the grain bin via a two-way radio he had on him when he jumped in. The man who went in after the original employee was rescued about an hour later and was transported to a local hospital for observation. Three teams of rescuers worked diligently to save the victim but were unable to. They ultimately did recover his body and he was pronounced dead at 1 pm by Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner.
