A 38-year old Coal City woman was killed when a loose wheel hub crashed through her front windshield on I-80 at 2:18 p.m. on March 8th. The mother of three daughters was expecting her fourth, a boy, in April. The accident occurred on the southeast side of Joliet near Rowell Avenue. The victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Authorities believe that the wheel hub came loose from the semi truck’s rear tractor axle as the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80. The hub crossed into the westbound lanes before crashing through the windshield of the victim’s GMC Acadia. The driver of the semi-truck was cited and charged with a Federal Motor Carrier Act violation for unsafe equipment.
