Rollover Accident in Chebanse costs a Champaign man his life

A rollover accident early on the morning of February 12th on I-57 resulted in the death of a Champaign man. The search for the accident caused another accident when a squad car hit the back of a fire protection SUV as the drivers of both protective service vehicles were searching for the rollover accident.

Eboni Williams of Champaign was heading north on Interstate 57 near Chebanse, Illinois when her vehicle left the road and rolled over in the west ditch of the highway.  Otto Township Fire Protection District Chief Jay Hanson was searching for the accident with an Illinois state trooper behind him. Hanson spotted the accident and braked his vehicle. The trooper was not aware of Hanson stopping and crashed into the back of the SUV.

Williams and her passenger, Lee. E. James, were later transported to Riverside Medical Center. James, a 52 year old resident of Champaign, died of his injuries. Williams was seriously injured in the rollover accident. Hanson and the state trooper were sent to Riverside for precautionary reasons. Both protective service vehicles received more than $1,500 worth of damage.
