Richland County two-vehicle crash hurts one

The Illinois State Police department has reported that a two-vehicle accident happened on Thursday, January 14 at around 6:00 p.m. on Illinois Route 130 southbound, located about six miles north of Olney in Richland County. The collision resulted in the hospitalization of one individual.

According to preliminary investigations, 49-year-old Newton resident Mark Muncy was attempting to steer his 2012 Peterbilt tractor into a private driveway by reversing across Illinois Route 130. While his vehicle occupied both the northbound and southbound lanes, 61-year-old Henderson, Kentucky resident Steven Schmelzer was driving his 2011 Toyota minivan north on the same road. Schmelzer’s Toyota collided with Muncy’s tractor.

Muncy was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Champaign. He was charged with Improper Lane Usage and Improper Backing, while Schmelzer was charged with Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
