Limbrel Side Effect Facts
After reports of almost 200 recent severe adverse cases, the FDA issued a Drug Safety Alert asking for a voluntary recall of the drug Limbrel. This drug is manufactured by Primus Pharmaceuticals in Scottsdale, Arizona. Limbrel, a capsule, was marketed for the metabolic processes for those who suffer from osteoarthritis, and was classified as a “medical food.” The FDA is warning anyone taking this drug that several serious problems have been reported. The worst cases have indicated a high risk of liver injury, as well as or in addition to a severe lung condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis – both are potentially life-threatening illnesses.
The FDA recommends anyone taking Limbrel to stop taking it immediately and contact their healthcare provider. The FDA also is asking any health care provider that knows of someone taking this drug, to reach out and advise patients to stop using it immediately. All reported reactions to this drug should be reported by the healthcare provider to the FDA’s MedWatch immediately.
To date, Primus has not recalled Limbrel according to the FDA. A letter dated December 18, 2017, from the FDA explains that this is a drug, not a “medical food” and it was not approved as such, so its labeling may be false, harmful, and misleading.
The recall was initiated by the FDA on these drugs:
- Limbrel (flavocoxid) 250 mg capsules
- Limbrel250 (250 mg flavocoxid with 50 mg citrated zinc bisglycinate) capsules
- Limbrel (flavocoxid) 500 mg capsules
- Limbrel500 (500 mg flavocoxid with 50 mg citrated zinc bisglycinate) capsules
Limbrel was marketed as an “all natural” product that still needed a doctor’s prescription for treating osteoarthritis, which is when the cartilage breaks down around the joints. The FDA is saying that Limbrel should be considered a drug that was never approved. It is possible that the drugmaker marketed the drug as a dietary supplement or “medical foods” to bypass rigorous tests by the FDA.
Limbrel contains high levels of flavonoids, which are extracted from green tea. These high concentrations have been linked to liver toxicity and are falsely assumed to be safe. The FDA has asked Primus Pharmaceuticals to pull Limbrel off the market; even samples have been asked to be removed from doctor’s offices. If you have taken or your loved one has taken this drug in any of its forms, stop taking it immediately and contact your healthcare provider. If you have any signs of jaundice, itchy skin, fever or other side effects, your next call should be to our lawyers at Spiros Law, P.C. for a free case consultation.
