Publish Date: 2022, 04, 08

On March 9th, 2022, a two-car crash resulted in two fatalities and two additional serious injuries. A driver of a vehicle traveling eastbound on Route 17 near Kankakee, Illinois failed to reduce speed and stop at a red light, causing the vehicle to crash into a westbound truck attempting to turn left on a green arrow. The passengers of both vehicles were unfortunately pronounced dead on the scene. Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were taken to the nearest hospital to receive medical attention. The 24-year-old driver of the eastbound traveling vehicle was cited with a DUI.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is extremely dangerous for not only the person using, it but for everyone on the road. Alcohol and drugs can give us a false sense of confidence in our actions, meaning we may feel more able to operate a vehicle than our reality permits. On average, there are more than 10,000 fatalities annually because of driving while intoxicated, with one happening almost every 52 minutes.  Knowing these startling statistics, we must do our part to keep our roadways safe.

Some ways we can help to eliminate potential threats include never drinking and driving. Driving while intoxicated reduces motor capabilities to a point where our reactions to things on the roadways are slowed. Additionally, recognize the sobriety level of people around you. Paying attention to your loved one’s consumption of alcohol alert you of intoxication more than their actions or behaviors, as some people can mask it well. If someone around you is attempting to drive under the influence, they may justify it with these phrases: “I’m fine”, “I only had a few”, “I have a high tolerance”. Realistically, drinking can lead to a false sense of security. In these cases, you may have to take the keys of whoever is trying to drive intoxicated or offer an alternative ride. Lastly, never get in the car with someone who has been drinking as it can put your life at serious risk.
