The California Zephyr train left Chicago and was headed to California at the time of the accident. It is unknown as to why the driver did not see the train earlier as there was flashing lights that could be seen at least a quarter mile away. There were 200 hundred passengers on the train and 14 crewmembers. The driver of the truck, the conductor and four others lost their lives in the accident.

The fire at the crash site was very hot, causing difficulties in the investigation. Nevada authorities have brought in at least one forensic anthropologist to help with the scene. Earl Weener, a National Transportation Safety Board member, stated it will take time to find out exactly how the accident happened.
