U.S. Highway 24 between Watseka and Crescent City was closed on Friday, July 15, 2011 until the morning of July 17, 2011 after a train carrying ethanol derailed
and one car leaked a chemical fluid.
The freight train was as 74-car T.P. & W. line between Iroquois county roads 1600 East and 1800 East in which the last car on that line fell on its side. This car contained denatured alcohol which came out of the vessel but was contained quickly. Firemen monitored traffic on country road 1700 for one mile due to the potential of drifting fumes.
Various county and state departments including Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police as well as Watseka City Police assisted in setting up the detour in the area that included Rts. 24, 45/52 and 1/52. Trainmaster Preston Nelson stated the derailment occurred because of a “faulty track.”

In the early hours of June 20, 2011, a house caught fire in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The fire left the family homeless and killed a two-month-old baby girl.
The fire started on a mattress and became so hot that family members could not get Tiniya Coleman who was in a first floor bedroom of the house on the 800 block of North Laramie. A firefighter grabbed the girl and she was transported to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.
The house had a fire detector but the battery in the device was dead. The fire remains under investigation by the Chicago Fire Department.
The residents of the home, nine adults and four children, are left without a home. The girl’s family are being put up temporarily by the American Red Cross.

Officials have said that after four days, oil has stopped leaking from the failed pipeline that caused 6,100 barrels of crude oil to be spilled onto the street of the industrial park.
A spokesperson from Enbridge Energy Partners announced that crews have been working to remove the broke pipeline, but that they have drained the remaining oil that was in the pipe. Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency have been investigating the incident to see if an environmental impact will have been made.
Officials have announced that the oil has been collected in a retention pond and have not reached the river.
The entire cleanup and excavation process will take at least a month, but will likely take longer. Businesses that are affected by the oil will be compensated.

Just because there are no cars around in the immediate area, does not mean you will not be affected when a car accident occurs. Tammy Walsh, a cheerleading coach at St. Joseph-Ogden High School, died Saturday when a utility pole at a football field fell on her.
The accident occurred in Jamaica and was a chain reaction from a driver hitting a guy-wire attached to another pole in a parking lot. The guy-wire is tension cable used as a brace to hold up a pole. Once that guy-wire was hit, the utility pole fell after a chain reaction. Walsh’s teenage son and father-in-law were also injured in the accident but are in fair condition and treated for less serious injuries, respectively.
