Chicago Westside House Fire kills one, leaves family homeless

Posted on June 27th, 2011 No Comments

In the early hours of June 20, 2011, a house caught fire in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The fire left the family homeless and killed a two-month-old baby girl.

The fire started on a mattress and became so hot that family members could not get Tiniya Coleman who was in a first floor bedroom of the house on the 800 block of North Laramie. A firefighter grabbed the girl and she was transported to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

The house had a fire detector but the battery in the device was dead. The fire remains under investigation by the Chicago Fire Department.

The residents of the home, nine adults and four children, are left without a home. The girl’s family are being put up temporarily by the American Red Cross.

Fires can become very hot, very fast and lead to loss of life. If you or a loved one has lost someone to a house fire, call Spiros Law at 815-929-9292 to find out your legal options. Visit the website at www.spiroslaw.com.

Oil has stopped leaking from failing pipeline

Posted on September 15th, 2010 No Comments

Officials have said that after four days, oil has stopped leaking from the failed pipeline that caused 6,100 barrels of crude oil to be spilled onto the street of the industrial park.

A spokesperson from Enbridge Energy Partners announced that crews have been working to remove the broke pipeline, but that they have drained the remaining oil that was in the pipe. Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency have been investigating the incident to see if an environmental impact will have been made.

Officials have announced that the oil has been collected in a retention pond and have not reached the river.

The entire cleanup and excavation process will take at least a month, but will likely take longer. Businesses that are affected by the oil will be compensated.

Illinois Supreme Court: No Caps on Malpractice Lawsuits

Posted on February 11th, 2010 No Comments

The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that caps limiting the amount that can be awarded in medical malpractice suits are against the state’s constitution.

The limits were passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2005, but the court has ruled that the legislation infringed on the power of the state’s judicial branch. Doctors’ advocacy groups are quick to criticize the ruling, stating that malpractice damages caps have made healthcare more widely available and less expensive. However, studies have indicated that medical malpractice lawsuits do not significantly increase the cost of medical care, contradicting this assertion.

If you or someone you love has been the victim of medical malpractice, contact the Kankakee personal injury attorneys of Sprios & Wall today by calling 815-929-9292.
