St. Louis Company Recalls Grape Tomatoes

Front Row Produce, based in St. Louis, is recalling grape tomatoes that have the potential to be contaminated with

the salmonella virus. The Food and Drug Administration along with the company is currently investigating the source of the problem.

 

Ten-ounce pint and 10-pounds bulk grape tomatoes are being recalled in Missouri and Illinois where Front Row Produce distributes its products. The grape tomatoes come from Rio Queen Citrus of Mission, Texas. It was through Rio Queen Citrus that the contamination was discovered during random testing of the produce.

 

No illnesses have been reported at this time. But the most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever that can occur within 8 hours to 72 hours of eating the contaminated product. For those with a weakened immune system, the virus can be life threatening.

300 People Evacuated from a Hotel in Bradley

The Holiday Inn Express in Bradley was evacuated on November 13, 2011 when a faulty heater apparently leaked carbon monoxide into a swimming pool area during the evening hours.  Over 300 people were forced to evacuate the hotel and 16 people were sent to the hospital.

 

At approximately 9 p.m. carbon monoxide detectors were triggered. Fire department personnel were sent to the hotel located near the Northfield Mall on Illinois Route 50. According to Bradley Fire Department Chief Jim Baird an ambulance crew responded to reports of more than one person getting sick at the hotel. Once they arrived, the ambulance personnel realized the scope of the situation.

 

After that the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated and the hotel was evacuated.

Cantaloupes Recalled After Listeria Outbreak

Cantaloupes that came from a farm in the Rocky Ford growing region of Colorado are being recalled after an outbreak of listeriosis bacterium. The cantaloupes were sent to 17 states including Illinois and Indiana, resulting in reports of 22 people having illness from the cantaloupes.

One case of illness from the cantaloupes has been reported in Indiana while none have occurred in Illinois.

 

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Jensen Farms in Granada, Colorado has been linked to the outbreak by food officials. The whole cantaloupes may be labeled “Colorado Grown, Distributed by Frontera Produce, USA, Pesticide Free, Jensenfarms.com, Sweet Rocky Fords” but not all cantaloupes are labeled as such.

 

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause an infection resulting in fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and still births in pregnant women according to the CDC. This outbreak has been linked to the death of two people, one in Colorado and the other in New Mexico.

Cargill Recalls 36 Million Pounds of Ground Turkey

The Minnesota-based company, Cargill, announced that they are recalling 36 million pounds of fresh and frozen ground turkey in light of a salmonella outbreak that has killed one person and sicken 76 other people in the United States.

Reported illnesses date back to March of 2011 and have come from 26 states coast to coast.

Michigan and Ohio have had the highest number of reported cases at ten each while Illinois has had seven reported cases, ranging in people aged 3- to 60-years-old. California is the only state to report a death due to this product.

The source of the contamination is believed to be from the company’s Springdale, Arkansas’ plant during the dates of February 20th through August 2nd of 2011.  Packages that in the recall include the code “Est. P-963,” and are under many different brand names. These include but are not limited to Honeysuckle White, Riverside Ground Turkey, Natural Lean Ground Turkey, Fit & Active Lean Ground Turkey, Spartan Ground Turkey and Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey Burgers. The recall also includes ground turkey products packaged under the HEB, Safeway, Kroger, Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Giant Eagle grocery store brands.

Salmonella cause diarrhea, nausea and other intestinal symptoms. It can lead to dehydration and death if not treated properly.

Seventeen Reported Cases of Salmonella Poisoning in Illinois Linked to Papayas from Mexico

The Department of Public Health reported seventeen cases of salmonella agona in the state of Illinois that has been linked to papayas from Mexico.

People in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Will and Winnebago counties were taken ill, eight people were hospitalized. In total, 97 people in 23 states are a part of the outbreak that was reported from January 1 and July 18 of this year. The Food and Drug Administration stated Illinois had the second highest amount of cases. The state of Texas had 25 cases of salmonella poisoning.

According to the Mayo Clinic symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea and diarrhea, leading to dehydration. Head aches, muscle pain and blood in the stool are other signs of food poisoning. In some cases, it can take several months to recover.

The papaya was distributed and sold by Agromod Produce of McAllen, Texas.

The company voluntarily recalled Blondie, Yaya, Mananita and Tastylicious brand of papayas. Anyone who has bought one of these papayas has been advised to put the papaya in a Ziploc bag and return it to the point of purchase or throw out the fruit.

Seven people sick in Illinois after national Salmonella outbreak

Seven people have gotten sick in the state of Illinois after a national outbreak of salmonella occurred. The outbreak has been linked to ground turkey, but no recall has been made because federal officials have not identified the exact source.

The first case in Illinois appeared in March and the last was June 29. There have been a total of 77 cases in 26 states across the nation. There was also one death.

According to the Illinois State Department of Public Health, cases have occurred in the following counties: Cass, Dupage, Will, Williamson, and Madison.

Salmonella contamination is known to cause intestinal problems.

Citronella product pulled from shelves

A citronella product that is sold at Bed Bath & Beyond and other major retailers has now been pulled off of the shelves after it was reported that two people were nearly killed after the product exploded.

The explosions were caused by FireGel, jelly-like substance that scents the citronella. The explosions injured a 14-year-old boy in Long Island and a 24-year-old Manhattan man.

An investigation then linked the two incidents to the product made by the Georgia-based company, Napa Home & Garden. Bed Bath & Beyond were then asked to remove the product from the shelves.

Upstate New York State Company Recalls Chives Due to Possible Listeria Contamination.

According to federal food authorities, chives from Goodness Garden of New Hampton in New York State are being recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

Listeria is a bacterium that can cause health issues for young children, frail adults and those with weakened immune systems.  Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and muscle aches according to the Mayo Clinic. Should the listeria infection spread to your nervous system, symptoms include headache, stiff neck, loss of balance and possible convulsions. For pregnant women there is the risk of miscarriages and stillbirths.

The chives were packaged in plastic clamshells containers, 1-pound bags and bunches held together by twist ties. The oniony-flavored herb that looks like grass leaves was sold through retailers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alabama, Virginia and Illinois.

At this time the FDA has not had a report of illness associated with the recalled chives.

The recalled lot is number 0201111 and is dated May 6. Consumers may return their chives to retailers for a refund.

Skippy Peanut butter recalled due to possible contamination

Unilever, the company that owns the Skippy Brand of peanut butter, announced in a press release that they were recalling the Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter and Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter as they may have been contaminated with the salmonella bacteria.


 
Stores in sixteen states in the Midwest and the New England Atlantic coast, including Illinois, were sent the jars of peanut butter. The affected jars have the UPC numbers of 048001006812 and 048001006782, and have “best if used by” dates of May1612LR1, May1712LR1, May1812LR1, May1912 LR1, May2012LR1 and May2112LR1.
 
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains and diarrhea. In healthy people the symptoms are mild but for the young, old and frail salmonella poisoning can be very serious or fatal in some cases.

Mobile Home Fire Caused by Space Heater.

A fire at the Prairieview Mobile Home Park has been linked to a faulty space heater. The mobile home park is located at 1995 S. Schuyler Avenue in Kankakee.


 
Three mobile homes were damaged by the fire. One trailer was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived according to Captain Mike Casagrande. Two other nearby homes suffered from heat damage.
 
A firefighter was hurt after falling through a floor while investigating the scene. Suffering only minor injuries, that firefighter was treated and released from a local hospital. No residents were injured as a result of this fire.
