In an effort to crack down on a number of dangerous and reckless driving habits, local law enforcement officers from five departments arrested nine drivers and gave out 42 citations in only six hours on Thursday, Jan. 24.
The group of officers was comprised of the Illinois State Police District 21, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department, Kankakee police, Bradley police, and the Kankakee Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group.
According to the state police, the officers “conducted a traffic enforcement detail,” on Interstate 57 and Illinois Routes 1, 17, 50, and U.D. Route 45/52 from 1 to 7 p.m., primarily focusing on a handful of specific violations including driving under the influence, failure to wear a seatbelt, and distracted driving.
Officers issued ninety-two written warnings and 42 citations by the end of the day.

A car accident occurred this past Saturday morning in Alsip when a passenger vehicle collided with the back of a semitrailer truck, resulting in serious injuries to both the driver and his passenger.
The 32-year-old driver and his 37-year-old female passenger had to be removed from the vehicle by firefighters, after the collision left the Ford Taurus they were in pinned underneath the semi’s trailer. Both were rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center and were reported to be in critical condition. While the cause of the accident was not known, alcohol intoxication was eliminated as a possible cause.

A pedestrian in the Lincoln Park neighborhood was hit by a cab and sent tot the hospital.
The 21-year-old woman was at the intersection of Ashland and Fullerton when the accident occurred between two taxi cars. One of the taxis ran a red light and hit a second taxi. That sent the second car towards the sidewalk in which the second car hit the woman before crashing into a liquor store.
The young woman was sent to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she is in stable but serious condition. The driver of the second cab and a passenger in the first cab suffered minor injuries. The driver of the first cab, Kakajan Islamov, was treated and released. The 27-year-old Chicago resident was later cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

An accident in Wheeling between a car and a semi truck has killed a woman.
The driver of a car was westbound on Palatine Road in the evening of January 9th. Around 11:30 p.m. as the woman approached the intersection of Wheeling Road, her car crashed into a semi truck that was making a left turn onto Wheeling.
The woman car driver, who was in her 50s, was taken to Lutheran General Hospitalwhere she was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. The driver’s name is pending release upon family notification. The semi driver was not injured in the accident.

An accident in Batavia involving an SUV spinning out and flipping over has left a St. Charles man dead on Monday morning.
Karl Smith, 45, was driving a 2005 Ford Expedition north on Route 25 on the morning of January 7th. Around 9:00 a.m. Smith came to a curve and the SUV began to spin out. The rotating Expedition hit an 2005 Honda Accord driven by Debra Berger, 60, that was heading south on Route 25. The Expedition then left the road and flipped over, landing on the roof.
Smith was pinned the vehicle and required extrication from firefighters. Smith was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Batavia resident Berger was taken to Delnor Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

McHenry County was the scene of a two-car collision that took the life of a Grand Prairie man on Friday morning.
Roderick Mann, 86, was driving his 2012 Lincoln MKZ westbound in the 22900 block of U.S. 20 in unincorporated Marengo Township on January 5th. Around 6 a.m. the Lincoln entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 1998 Honda sedan.
The driver of the Honda, Stephan A. Ford, 63, was declared dead at the scene of the accident. The Grand Prairie resident did not have airbags in his Honda and nor was he wearing a seat belt. Lincolnshire resident Mann was taken to Centegra Hopsital Woodstock and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation at this time.

A two-car crash on New Year’s Day has left one person injured and another dead.
Timothy Schnur, of Schaumburg, was driving in the Far South Side of Chicago on the morning of January 1st. Around 10:30 a.m., Schnur crashed into another car in the 3300 block of East 100th Street which is near the 100th Street Bridge that goes over the Calumet River.
Schnur, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A woman was taken from the scene of the accident to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. At this time there is no word as to what caused the accident.

Icy conditions lead to a head-on collision in Iroquois County last Friday.
Martinton resident Joshua Mitton was driving on County Road 2200 East just north of Watseka in Middleport Township when his pickup truck began to skid on the ice-covered road. Around 9:30 a.m., Mitton went into the other lane and crashed head-on into a mini-van driven by Rodney Bohlmann, of Watseka.
The 63-year-old Bohlmann required extensive extrication to be removed from his vehicle, according to reports. Bohlmann and his wife were taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital along with Mitton, 33, and his three juvenile passengers. Both vehicles sustained over $1,500 in damages.

A vehicle going the wrong way on a street resulted in the death of a woman from the Logan Square neighborhood on Saturday morning.
Obdulia Villalobos, 67, was riding in the backseat of her daughter’s 2001 Volkswagon Golf as the daughter drove southbound on North Pulaski Avenue on December 22nd. Around 4:45 a.m., the vehicle was in the 2600 block of North Pulaski when a Blazer that was heading northbound in the southbound lane of the road drove towards them. Villalobos’ daughter attempted to avoid the Blazer but her car was hit on the passenger side.
The Logan Square resident and her daughter were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where Villalobos was pronounced dead at 5:18 a.m. The condition of the daughter was not known at this time. Another passenger in the car, a 25-year-old male, was not injured. The Blazer and the driver were found at a different location by police and interviewed about the accident.

A man from La Grange, Illinois died in a fiery car accident when the car he was riding in hit a tree.
In the early hours of December 17th, Aleksandra Strikas was driving his 2012 Volkswagon Passat in New Buffalo Township in Michigan along with Matthew Ross, 25, of Harbet, Michigan. As the 22-year-old La Grange resident approached the intersection of Marquette and Lakeshore Drive, police believe that he went through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign and hit a tree in front of a home on Lakeshore Drive.
When police came upon the scene of the accident the Passat was in flames. The bodies of the two men were discovered in the car after the fire was put out. Officials were able to identify the men by medical and dental records. Preliminary tests from the medical examiner’s office determined that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
