Man killed in Kankakee one-car accident

One man was killed in a Kankakee car accident in the morning hours of Sunday.

According to officials, the accident occurred when the man was heading northbound on Skyline Road and he crossed the center line for unknown reasons. He continued to cross the road and struck a mailbox before hitting a ditch and rolling over.

He was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital  to be treated, but he was later pronounced dead. The exact details are still being constructed at this time and autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

Manteno Man Killed in Crash

Early Sunday morning, a single automobile crash took the life of a Manteno man.

Walter Waszak Jr., 36, was traveling north on Skyline Road in rural Kankakee County on March 27, 2011. Near 2624  North Road, Waszak’s c ar crossed the centerline

and struck a mailbox. The auto then hit a culvert before rolling over. Waszak was taken to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m.

According to Coroner Robert Gessner, an autopsy has been scheduled and the accident is being reconstructed to determine the cause of the accident.

Crash on Route 66 takes the life of a 63-year-old woman.

A crash that occurred just south of Pontiac on Friday, March 18, 2011 killed a 63-year-old Pontiac woman and remains under investigation.
 
According to the Pontiac Daily Leader, Bonifacia Pina was a passenger in the back seat as her husband, Juan Pina, was driving northbound on Route 66. Their Chevrolet Equinox was struck by Chicagoan Calvin E. Boyd’s 1997 BMW as Boyd was headed southbound. Once Mrs. Pina was extracted from the vehicle she was taken to OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center’s emergency room where she was pronounced dead.
 
Mr. Pina, 81, and Mr. Boyd, 50, were airlifted to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria. As of Monday, March 21st, both men were listed in fair condition.

There was also a 2-year-old child in the Pina vehicle but no report on the condition of the child was available.

Man files medical malpractice suit after going blind in surgery

A man has filed a medical malpractice suit against a surgeon and Trinity Regional Health System after losing his sight in surgery.

The man went to the hospital in May 2010 to have lumbar surgery and remove bone fragments from his body. When he awoke from the surgery, he was unresponsive, had low blood pressure and could not move his lower extremities.

The man is obese and had type 2 diabetes. The man also was unable to see and he never regained his sight.

The court date is set for this summer and he is seeking $50,000 in damages.

Man injured in plow truck fire

A man was killed during a plow truck fire at the Kankakee County golf course due to carbon monoxide  intoxication.

The 71-year-old man was the groundskeeper for the Minne Monnesse Golf Course shoveling snow on the course after a blizzard when the truck caught on fire.  The inhalation of the “smoke and smoot” was found to be the cause of his death after an investigation was done by the County Coroner’s Office.

Skippy Peanut butter recalled due to possible contamination

Unilever, the company that owns the Skippy Brand of peanut butter, announced in a press release that they were recalling the Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter and Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter as they may have been contaminated with the salmonella bacteria.


 
Stores in sixteen states in the Midwest and the New England Atlantic coast, including Illinois, were sent the jars of peanut butter. The affected jars have the UPC numbers of 048001006812 and 048001006782, and have “best if used by” dates of May1612LR1, May1712LR1, May1812LR1, May1912 LR1, May2012LR1 and May2112LR1.
 
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains and diarrhea. In healthy people the symptoms are mild but for the young, old and frail salmonella poisoning can be very serious or fatal in some cases.

Two Southwestern Illinois Teens Die from Electrocution

Two high school students were electrocuted on March 3, 2011, leaving the town of Okawville, 40 miles southeast of St. Louis, to mourn their loss. On the day of the funerals, March 8, there were two shiny tractors sitting in front of the high school where both young men were students. Nick Bledsoe was his class’ president.
 
Bledsoe, 19, and Justin Eldridge, 18, were spreading manure at a farm near Okawville where they both worked when they noticed a raccoon run into an aluminum irrigation pipe. The high school seniors were attempting to move the pipe to release the animal when it touched an overhead power line.

Eight employees at LaGrange Factory sent to Hospital after Acetone Spill.

Police and fire crews were dispatched to a factory that manufactures keypads for electronic devices after employees became exposed to acetone on March 14, 2011.

Grayhill, Inc. in LaGrange, Illinois, was the scene of the acetone spill. Firefighters ventilated the area as a precaution even though the scene had been cleared. Eight employees were sent to Advocate LaGrange Memorial Hospital after complaining of nausea and dizziness.

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), acetone is a colorless liquid that has a distinctive smell to it. Acetone is used to make plastics, fibers and drugs as wells as to dissolve other substances. When inhaled, acetone can cause irritation to the lungs, nose, ears, throat and eyes. Headaches and light-headedness can also be cause by over-exposure to acetone.

Three-vehicle crash ends with one man in hospital

A three-vehicle crash between a school bus, minivan and a car caused one man to be sent to the hospital.

According to officials, the accident occurred as a school bus, that was carrying eight school children, attempted to pass a car on Vine Street, but struck the car while trying to do so . The bus then went around the car and struck a minivan two or three times.

When police arrived at the scene, the bus driver did not have an explanation for what happened.

No children were injured in the accident, but the driver of the first car was sent to the hospital where he was treated and released. The bus driver was charged with failure to reduce speed in order to avoid an accident.

Truck accident sends four to hospital

According to Illinois State Police, a multi-vehicle truck accident on Interstate 80 sent four to the hospital.

The accident occurred as a box truck was traveling east down the roadway and was rear ended by a passenger vehicle. The collision left the vehicles disabled on the roadway. A semi-truck, also traveling east, then tried to avoid the collision and swerved into the median.

This caused the semi to flip over onto its side. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and extricated two people from the car and two others from the semi. All four were then transported to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.
