A house in Bourbonnais suffered extensive damage from fire, smoke and water on November 24, 2010. It w as
a fire that would see eight area fire departments assist in putting out the blaze.
Bourbonnais firemen were the first to arrive at the home at 625 Lewis Street as flames were reaching out to the second floor of the home. The home’s three car garage door was open; the space was filled with heavy flames.
While no injuries were reported, the house suffered damages estimated at $250,000. The cause of the fire was still under investigation. Fire departments from Bourbonnais, Manteno, Limestone, Kankakee, Kankakee Township, Momence, Aroma Park and Wilmington assisted with putting out the fire. Ambulances from Provena St. Mary and Riverside also assisted at the scene.

A medical malpractice lawsuit that was filed after a man suffered from a brain injury after being in the care of the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center has just been settled and an amount of $16.2 million has been approved by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
According to the lawsuit, the 47-year-old man, a former police officer, suffered a brain injury after the nursing staff failed to monitor the man’s intracranial pressure during an EVD challenge.
The result of the negligence lead the man’s ICP levels dangeorusly elevated causing the man to suffer from quadriplegia. In addition to the $16.2 million, another $1.5 million will be paid by the nursing agency.

A Burbonnais man was killed in a drunken driving accident in Iroquois County.
It was a one-vehicle accident and the 19-year-old that was behind the wheel has been charged with aggressive DUI and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.
The 20-year-old passenger of the vehicle was killed in the accident.
The accident occurred at 4:13 a.m. as the car went off of the side of Route 52 and hit a tree on the passenger side of the car.

A 14-year-old boy was killed in a Martintown Township rollover car accident on Saturday morning.
According to authorities, the accident occurred as the 37-year-old driver in the car was driving westbound down County Road 2400N when he swerved in order to avoid an animal in the road. The vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a ditch, and rolled over before finally coming to a stop.
The 14-year-old, the driver and another 15-year-old in the car were all transported to the hospital. The 14-year-old was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the accident.
The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed in order to avoid an accident.

Grant Park, in north-eastern Kankakee County, was the site of an accident that cost an elderly woman her life on November 2, 2010.
Beatrice Poortenga was driving eastbound on 8000 North Road. At the intersection of Illinois routes 1 and 17, the 83-year-old Lansing, Illinois resident apparently failed to stop. According to Sgt. Angela Kinstner of the Illinois State Police, Poortenga’s car was then hit by a southbound semi trailer and then hit by a northbound box truck. Poortenga was later pronounced dead at Provena St.
Mary’s Hospital.

It was a near miss for a Kankakee house when a car jumped a curb on Greenwood Avenue, injuring two people in the process.
The car was hit by a truck that lead the car to going over the curb and coming within inches of the house.
According to the Daily Journal, Theresa Jones stated her two children normally play in front of the house but they were in the back yard at the time of the crash. The Kankakee Fire Department was called and spent fourteen minutes removing two people from the car just outside of the front porch of the house. These two people were taken to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital. Privacy laws prevented the release of the victims’ names.
